John’s Approach

I use a clinically and research proven advance in mental health care called cognitive behavior therapy. My therapy recognizes the relationship between your thoughts and behavior. The behavior therapy part helps you change the connection between stressful situations and your reactions. The cognitive therapy part teaches you how certain ways of thinking give you a distorted view of events in your life. This distorted view makes you feel sad, anxious, depressed, or angry. These feelings can cause you to take ill-chosen actions. Cognitive therapy has been found to be as effective as drugs in treating depression and anxiety.

Active Therapy

I help you solve problems. From the beginning you find out what needs to be changed and what does not. We work together as you make positive changes. To speed up your progress and multiply the results of the work done during therapy sessions you take part in homework.

Brief Therapy-Session Length
I focus on rapid improvement in your feelings and moods. I help you make early changes in any self-defeating behaviors. Most clients complete treatment in 6-8 sessions or about two months of weekly sessions. Couple counseling ranges from 8-10 sessions.

Longer Therapy
With complex problems or living in adverse conditions beyond your control, longer term treatment may continue up to 16 sessions or more.
